History:

The origins of the "Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Pilar" in Calatayud remain in the figure of Rodrigo Zapata y Palafox, a charitable canon of the Seo in Zaragoza and admirer of the Society of Jesus as a result of his studies in the University of Salamanca. In 1580, he offered alms to motivate the study on Arts and Latinity in Calatayud but they were rejected by the Superior General Everardo Mercuriano. Four years later, his alms were accepted during Claudio Acquavida's generalship. So, on the 29th of October 1584, the school was founded and Rodrigo Zapata received the title of founder. In 1595, the priests inaugurated the "Estudio Mayor". In 1600, they received the parish church of San Salvador, expanding the possessions around the school. Another of its major benefactors was the jurist Pedro Santángel Pujadas, who gave 20.000 pounds in 1601. Later, in 1752, the "Seminario de Nobles" began to be built. However, the Jesuits were expelled in 1767 and the building was not finished yet.
