History:

The founding of the College of San Gregorio was initiative of Brother Alonso de Burgos, who was the confessor of Elizabeth the Catholic, the "canciller mayor" and the bishop of Córdoba, Cuenca and Palencia. This Dominican was related to the convent of San Pablo in Valladolid, since he had performed his canonical studies there. Because of this, he founded the college near this house. The Papal bull that authorized the foundation was signed by Innocent VII on the 15th of December 1487. The works started in 1488 and they were finished in 1496. The college became an example in Theology studies. Some important figures such as Bartolomé de las Casas, Melchor Cano, Luis de Granada or Francisco de Vitoria stayed there. They founded bishoprics and universities in America and determined the Spanish position in the Council of Trent. The well-known Valladolid debate was developed in this college, where they argued the rights of the American indigenous on request of Charles I. In the 18th century, the illustrated politics of the Bourbons made that the college lost its influence. So, it started to decrease until the 19th century, when the college suffered several Napoleonic invasions during the War of Independence. It became definitely inoperative in 1835, when the decrees that suppressed almost all the Spanish male convents were applied. Since 1933, the building has served as the headquarters of the National Sculpture Museum.
