Although instituted in the Partidas by Alfonso X and Henry IV (Cortes of Toledo, 1462), the Catholic Monarchs were the ones to dictate the first regulations on the registration process (how and what is to be registered) and its conservation in the Cortes of Madrigal (1476) and in the Cortes of Alcalá de Henares (1498). The Registro del Sello de Corte only contains the documents validated with the sello mayor* or plate seal generated by the King (Chamber), the Royal Council of Castile, the Head Accountants, the Alcaldes de Casa y Corte**, and the Council of Inquisition in the first instance, until the remaining councils are assigned their corresponding seals.

*Sello mayor: an equivalent of the great seal. It played a greater political role and was kept in the Royal chancery.

**Alcaldes de Casa y Corte: an administrative and judicial institution in Castile, whose origin dates back to the 13th century. It administered justice and performed the duties of the city government, and was regarded as the headquarters of the Court.

The fond consists of a single series, known as the Registro del Sello de Corte. The first registers gathered by Diego de Ayala between 1573 and 1580 are brought to the Archivo General de Simancas* (Valladolid) in 1583. The oldest registers held in the Archivo de la Cancillería in Valladolid span the period from 1475 to 1572 and are transferred therefrom in 1592. The remaining documents will be gradually shipped and incorporated to the archive between the 16th and 17th centuries (the last shipment dates back to 1718). The Registro del Sello, which comprises the period 1690-1893, can be found in the Archivo Histórico Nacional** in Madrid.
