King of Spain between 1870 and 1873 and first Duke of Aosta. He was born in Turin on May 30, 1845 and died in the same city on January 18, 1890. He was son of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Piedmont-Sardinia and, since 1861, King of Italy of the House of Savoy, and of Adelaide of Austria (great-granddaughter of Charles III of Spain, therefore Amadeo's great-great grandfather). In 1867 he married Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo, Princess della Cisterna and Belriguardo, with whom he had three children: Prince Emanuele Filiberto (Duke of Aosta), Prince Vittorio Emanuele (Count of Turin), and Prince Luigi Amedeo (Duke of the Abruzzi). After the premature death of his first wife (November 8, 1876) and after a long period as widower, in 1888 Amadeo married again, this time his own niece, the French princess Maria Letizia Bonaparte (daughter of his sister Princess Maria Clotilde, married to Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte). They had one son, Prince Umberto (Count of Salemi). After being proclaimed by the Cortes in November of 1870, and accepted the Crown, he swore the Constitution in Madrid on January 2, 1871. His arrival coincided with the assassination of General Prim, his main supporter. Spanish political life lacked stability: republican and Bourbon conspiracies, personal struggles between loyal parties, ephemeral governments, Carlist uprisings (1872), attacks, separatism in Cuba. Obliged to sign the dissolution of the Artillery Corps, he announced his abdication to the Spanish Crown in 1873.
