It was founded in 1900 with money repatriated from Cuba after the Spanish-American War in 1898, which in turn inspired the bank's name. In 1991, the merger of two banks, namely the Banco Cental and the Banco Hispanoamericano, gave rise to the Banco Central Hispano. The Grupo Santader stemmed from the merger between the Banco Santander and the Banco Central Hispano (BCH) in 1999.
