He was a jurist and a professor of Spanish law. He was the son of Ramón Xirau Llorens y María del Remedio Palau Reig. He studied high school at Instituto General y Técnico de Figueres (Gerona) and graduated in Law from Universidad de Barcelona in 1914. He obtained his doctorate in 1916.
He completed his education at the Historical Studies Centre and extended them at Universidad de Berna with professor Huber in 1920. He also studied at the universities of Rome, Munich and Berlin.
He was professor in Legal Proceedings and Forensic Practice at Universidad de Murcia in 1918 and located to Universidad de Sevilla in 1919. He was named librarian in 1921 by the Faculty of Law Board of Universidad de Sevilla.
In 1925 he relocated to Universidad de Barcelona with the same post and was elected Dean of the Faculty of Law in 1931.
He was also cofounder of the Socialist Union of Catalonia, deputy for the district of Barcelona in 1931 and made member of the Public Instruction Council by the provisional government of the Second Republic. He is purged in 1939, when he goes into exile to France, where he lives until his death.
