He was the son of Juan Uría Uría, Mayor of Oviedo, and of María González Argüelles. He married Blanca Meruendano Cantalapiedra. He graduated in Law from Universidad de Oviedo in 1929. That same year he got a scholarship to expand the studies of commercial law at Universität zu Köln (Germany). He obtained his doctorate from Universidad Central de Madrid in 1930. From 1931 to 1934, he continued his studies on Commercial Law in different German universities thanks to another scholarship.
He was professor of Commercial Law at Universidad de Salamanca in 1943. In 1953, he is given a leave of absence of ten years, with the promise to save his professorship. In 1954 he was professor at Universidad de Madrid. On 22nd April 1983, he was dismissed without sanction and he retired in 1876.
He was also a spokesperson for the General Commission of Codification; Secretary-Chief of the Commercial Law Section at the National Institute for Legal Studies; Member of the Bar Association of Madrid; Academic of Jurisprudence and Law in 1975; Counselor of the Bank of Spain from 1980 to 1982; founder of the Association of Friends of the Prado Museum; advisor of the journal Expansión, and awarded the prize Príncipe de Asturias for Social Sciences in 1990.
