Spanish Law professor and senator. He was the son of Benito Canella and Carlota Secades. He started his academic training in 1865 studying the baccalaureate of Arts at the Senior High School of Oviedo. He studied the baccalaureate on Philosophy and Literature and the degree on Law at the University of Oviedo. In addition, he received baccalaureate training on Jurisprudence at the Faculty of Law. He specialised on Administrative Law at the University of Oviedo and he then moved to the Universidad Central in Madrid. It is between these two universities where he got his doctorate. Furthermore, he was awarded a degree on Law at the Universidad Central too.

His academic career was focus on the University of Oviedo and it started in 1872 when he was designated assistant professor. After that, he got the chair of Extension of Civil Law and the chair of History and Elements of Spanish Civil, Common and Regional Law. After a reform in the study program he made use of the chair of Spanish Civil, Common and Regional Law and the Chair of Elements of Spanish Public Finances. He was appointed vice rector, rector and dean at the Faculty of Law.
