Spanish professor, historian, jurist and economist. He was the son of Manuel Carande Galán and Ascensión Thovar Uribe. He was married to Rosa de la Torre.
He started his academic training at the high school of Santander. He continued studying at the Universidad Central in Madrid where he got a degree on Law and a doctorate. He extended his studies of economy in Munich, Vienna, Berlin, Freiburg and London.
His academic career started when he became an assistant professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Granada. In 1916 he obtained the chair of Political Economy and Elements of Public Finances by the University of Murcia. In addition, he was dean at the Faculty of Law. He was transferred to the same chair at the University of Seville and he became rector of the university. He was sanctioned in 1937 and he was reincorporated to the teaching activity in 1944.
He carried out other activities such as:
Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universities of Lille (1960), Cologne (1969), Berlin, Complutense de Madrid (1977), Valladolid (1983) and Salamanca (1984).
Member of the Academia de Buenas Letras in Barcelona and member of the International Office of Historic Sciences.
Prince of Asturias Award of Social Sciences in 1985.
