He was a Spanish professor of Law and jurist who studied Humanities at the monastery of Guadalupe and graduated in Philosophy and Law at the Universidad de Madrid in 1846, obtaining his doctorate in Administration in 1860. He graduated in Law by the Universidad de Sevilla in 1869.
Professor of Arabic at the Universidad de Granada in 1847. He was appointed dean of the Faculty of Humanities of Granada in 1857. He moved to the Universidad Central de Madrid in 1859, occupying the chair of History of the Treaties. Dean of the Faculty of Law. Rector of the said university since 1870 until the end of the Republic.
Other positions he held were:
Professor of The Philosophy among the Arabs at the Athenaeum in 1885, institution of which he was president. He was really keen on languages throughout his whole life. Academician of the academies of Moral and Political Sciences, of the History and of Jurisprudence and Legislation, of which he was president too. General Director of Public Instruction in 1874. Parliamentary deputy by Granada in 1844, and by the districts of Badajoz and Castuera between 1865 and 1869. Senator.
