He was a Spanish professor of Law and bishop. Born in San Lorenzo del Escorial (Madrid), he was the son of José María López Trevilla and Leonor Ortiz Carjón.
He studied the high school at the Instituto Cisneros de Madrid and graduated at the Universidad Central de Madrid on the 8th of April, 1931, obtaining the doctorate in 1931. He joined the Orden de San Agustín de San Lorenzo del Escorial in 1917. He was appointed priest in 1922. He was granted with a scholarship by the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios (JAE) to continue his studies at the Universities of Munich, Würzburg and Berlin.
He was a professor of History of Law of the Universidad de Santiago in 1934. He was dismissed without sanction in 1939 and reinstated in his position by Franco’s regime. Professor of History of the Church and of Canon Law of the Universidad Central in 1942, he asked for a leave on personal grounds when he was named bishop of Tuy (Vigo).
Other positions he held were:
Advisor of the Servicio de Defensa del Patrimonio Artístico Nacional in 1939. Medieval historian and Arabist. Head of the Section of Law and Muslim Institutions of the Escuela de Estudios Árabes de Madrid between 1932 and 1934. Vice president of the CSIC. He collaborated with several magazines such as Al-Andalus, Cruz y Raya and La Ciudad de Dios. He was part of the judges that judged the doctor thesis of José María Escrivá de Balaguer, founder of the Opus Dei.
