Herman Rosenstein was born on February 6, 1915, Brooklyn, New York, under the name Hyman Rosentein. During the Depression he worked as a bookkeeper for the William Morris Agency in New York City. He also worked as a salesman and stenographer. He was a member of the Communist Party since April 27, 1936, and member of the Young Communist League since same year, and member of the American Labor Party since 1937.
When Rosenstein declared that he was going to Spain to join the antifascists in the International Brigades, his mother tried to prevent it by taking away his passport, but he procured another one, using his mother’s maiden name, Klein.
He sailed on May 29, 1937 aboard the "Britannic" and arrived in Spain on June 18, 1937. Served with the 15th International Brigade. He received training in the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion and served with the Company 1 of the Lincoln-Washington Battalion at Quinto and Belchite. His last unit was the Company 3 of the Lincoln-Washington Battalion with the rank of Private. Distinguishing himself in battle, he was promoted to Sergeant. He remained in Spain until the International Brigades were evacuated from the country in the winter of 1938.
He returned to the US on December 20, 1938 aboard the "Ausonia" and in March 13, 1941, he enlisted with the Armed forces. During the Second World War, Rosenstein was a first-aid worker, seeing action in the Pacific and in Europe.
After the war, he worked as an auto mechanic, an electrician, a warrant officer, and later on the Housing Commission in Santa Monica, California. He participated in Vietnam anti-war marches and supported numerous other political causes. He remained involved with the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (VALB) throughout his life.
Since 1941, he was married with his wife, Mildred. They had a son, Paul, who became mayor of Santa Monica, and a daughter, Frances. They moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1958 and to Santa Monica in 1980. Rosenstein died on April 8, 1996 and buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery.

Regresó a los EE.UU. el 20 de diciembre de 1938 a bordo del "Ausonia" y el 13 de marzo de 1941, se alistó en las Fuerzas Armadas. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Rosenstein trabajó de asistente de primeros auxilios, estando en campos de batalla del Pacífico y de Europa.
Después de la guerra, trabajó de mecánico, electricista, suboficial, y más tarde en la Comisión Regional de Vivienda en Santa Mónica, California. Participó en las marchas contra la guerra de Vietnam y ha apoyado otras numerosas causas políticas. Estuvo involucrado con los Veteranos de la Brigada Abraham Lincoln (VALB) durante toda su vida.
Desde 1941 se casó con Mildred y tuvieron un hijo, Paul, que fue alcalde de Santa Mónica, y una hija, Frances. Se mudaron desde Nueva York a Los Ángeles en 1958 y a Santa Mónica en 1980. Rosenstein murió el 8 de abril de 1996 y fue enterrado en el Cementerio Nacional de Los Ángeles.
