He was a British film director. He was the son of the British Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith during the First World War. He studied in Winchester college and in Balliol College of Oxford. His first success as film director was "Pygmalion" (1938). He dealt with police genre as well as the documentaries with movies like "A cottage on Dartmoor" (1929) and "Tell England" (1931) about the Dardanelos battle. The adaptations he made about the Oscar Wilde's homonymus work "The importance of being earnest" (1953) and about the Second World War with "The way to the stars" (1945) were also a success. Among his master pieces were "The browning version" (1951) and "The winslow boy" (1948).
