The 42nd Mixed Brigade was formed in the Madrid front on the 1st January 1937 and led by the Commander of Carabineers Esteban Rovira Pacheco. The commissioner was Manuel Piñera Bello and the Chief of Staff was Inocencio Fernández López. The Brigade joined the 6th Division of the I Army Corps, covering the center-left sector that stretched all the way from the southern wall of Casa de Campo to the river Manzanares at the height of Villaverde. The operations in the area conducted by the 42nd Mixed Brigade followed the tactic of trench warfare. Rovira was substituted by his Chief of Staff Inocencio Fernández López, who was in turn replaced by the Major of Militias José León Adán on the 25th June. On the 7th June, the 42nd Mixed Brigade unsuccessfully attempted to attack the so-called "Landfill Apex" or "Vértice Basurero". On the 14th September, Argimiro García Mayoral was appointed commissioner to be substituted by Máximo Tomás Huete at a later stage, up until the leadership of the Brigade was entrusted to the Major of Militias Manuel Fernández Cortinas on the 19th September. On the 6th March 1939, the Brigade played an active part against the putsch conducted by colonel Casado. It occupied Fuencarral, Tetuán de las Victorias, Cuatro Cminos and reached the area of Nuevos Ministerios by following the outline of Bravo Murillo and Ríos Rosas street. Its advance continued the next day along Paseo de la Castellana and Serrano street into Civeles and the Independence Square. The control position of the 7th Division was scattered across the Plaza de Dr. Marañón, the Headquarters of Engineers, Pinar, the Education Centre and Unit of the CNT located at Salas, whereas the present-day Lázaro Galdiano Museum housed the Civil Government. Upon Casado's triumph, Fernández Cortinas was deposed and the Major of Militias Juan Sánchez Castro attained the post. The 42nd Mixed Brigade issued a monthly newspaper, called "The Combatant".
