The kings of the Crown of Aragon ordered to keep in their Archives, along with the books of registers of his chancery, many other documents of varied content and origin. In the 18th century, these loose documents were separated according to whether they were written on paper or on parchment and were ordered by reigns, chronologically. It was thus formed the so called series 'cartas reales' (royal letters), with around 45,000 documents of the royal chancery written on paper, from the 13th to the 15th centuries. They are for the most part letters addressed to the kings of Aragon by other kings and authorities and by royal officials from all the territories of the Crown.

The dominion of the Crown of Aragon on the island of Malta begins with the occupation of the territories of the Kingdom of Sicily in 1282 after the rebellion of the Sicilian Vespers. This dominion was consolidated in the following years, despite the opposition of the Papacy and the house of Anjou. The kings of Aragon, however, left the title of king of Sicily in the hands of other members of his family until the early fifteenth century. Since then, the kings of Aragon and later the kings of Spain were also kings of Sicily and Malta. They exercised the government through its viceroys, a position held by nobles and high ecclesiastics. The government exercised it through its viceroys, a position that was held by nobles and high ecclesiastics. In this letter, the then viceroys, Domingo Ram, Bishop of Lérida, and Antonio de Cardona, announce to King Alfonso V of Aragón the sending of two peregrine falcons of those captured on their island of Malta.
