Correspondencia del Gobernador de Natchez, Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, a varias autoridades.
Legajo 43. 1795-1797, [1792, 1793, 1798]. Correspondencia del Sr. Gayoso al Barón de Carondelet. B, 21.5 cm., 650 documents. The major part of the legajo is of the years 1795-1797, but there are a very few letters for 1792, 1793, 1798. The legajo is disorganized, though the letters for each month are often well together. The legajo consists of the following series of correspondence, relating almost entirely to the Natchez district:
(a) Letters of Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, Natchez, San Fernando de las Barrancas, and Nuevo Madrid, to: 1795, Tomás Portell; 1796, Ignacio Delinó; 1795-1797, Barón de Carondelet; 1795, 1797, Carlos de Vilemont; 1796, Rafael Croquer; 1796-1797, Elias Beauregard; 1797, José Corail, Gilberto Guillemard, Carlos Howard; 1798, Martin Duralde, Francisco Rivas. (b) Drafts of Barón de Carondelet to: 1795, Martin Palao; 1797, Blanco, Breton, José Corail, Rafael Croquer, Guillermo Duparc, Pedro de Marigny, Juan Maria Perchet, José Valliere, and Villanueva. The bulk of the legajo is of letters of Gayoso de Lemos to Carondelet and Delinó. Subjects treated: 1795, relations of Spain and Kentucky; rumors of an expedition from Kentucky against Luisiana; indian affairs, gifts; protestants at Natchez and the religious situation at that place; supplies; military matters; Tardiveau; americans and the indians; Wilkinson; flour shipped to Nueva Orleans; movements of war vessels; rumored attack on San Fernando; 1796, cession of territory north of 31º to United States, execution of the treaty; american immigrants into Luisiana; indian affairs, medals, gifts; titles to town lots at Natchez; land grants to soldiers and others; Lachaisse; general Collot; 1797, indian affairs, presents; boundary of Luisiana and United States, instructions for evacuation of posts; arrival of american troops at Natchez, their conduct; Ellicott; suspension of the evacuation of the posts by Spain; reports on fortifications at Nogales; relations of indians and spaniards; attack on Illinois by english.
