Legajo 1571. 1799-1808, 1812. Correspondencia con el gobernador de la Florida. Id. con el id. de Baton Rouge. (Someruelos 38; Capitanes Generales 523.) B, 23.5 cm., 331 documents. Letters are present for the years 1799, 1804-1808, and the months of jan.-apr., 1812. The first group are arranged in order by months, the letters of each series being separate within the months. The letters of Grand Pré are arranged in chronological order, and form one-third of the legajo. The letters of San Maxent and part of those of Grand Pré are in duplicate. The legajo consists of letters to Marqués de Someruelos, captain general of Cuba, from: 1812, jan. 2-mar. 28. Juan José Estrada, governor of Florida, nos. 83-105. Series continued in legajo 1789; see legajos 1569, 1570 1812, jan. 8-apr. 24. Francisco Maximiliano de San Maxent, commandant of Panzacola, nos. 1184-1194, 1196-1229. Series continued in legajo 1797; see legajo 1570. 1799, july 25-sept. 25, 1804, feb. 22-1808, dec.1. Carlos de Grand Pré, commandant of Baton Rouge. Many of the above letters are accompanied by drafts of replies, and there are some other drafts of the captain general to the above officials. Subjects treated by Estrada: Project of the americans to seize Florida; violation of spanish territory by an american gunboat; invasion of Florida by americans at Fernandina and capture of this place; voluntary subscription to the crown. Many of the letters transmit military reports and acknowledge receipt of royal orders. By San Maxent: Project of the americans to seize Florida; exaction of transit duties at Mobila; condition of the province. Many of the letters transmit petitions and military reports, and treat of convicts. By Grand Pré: 1799, his right to position as acting governor, and complaints against Bouligny; 1806, movements of the americans, their plan to attack Baton Rouge, Luisiana, and México; Burr; condition of the fortifications at Baton Rouge; 1808, route of travel from Baton Rouge to Panzacola, and time to make trip; loyalty of the inhabitants of Baton Rouge; injuries arising from the 'Embargo Act'; relations with the americans.
