LaVerne A. Grell was born on August 2, 1925, in Crawford, Iowa. He was married with Dolores Belen Grell and he had two daughters. He was the owner and operator of L.A. Grell Concrete Construction Co. and was a member of Cement Masons Local 594, Concord Democratic Party, International Friendship Society and Mt. Diablo Peace Center. He was also a member of Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade where he was active along with others brigadiers in the production process of a project proposed by Harriman Emanuel (Manny) in which the team had completed approximately 185 separate interviews (comprising at least 218 videocassettes), covering the personal histories of more than 180 veterans.

He served in the Army during the Second World War.

Grell died on July 23, 1995, and was buried at Memory Gardens Cemetery in California.
