Delmer Berg was born on December 20, 1915 in Anaheim, California. He had studied in the Manteca High School, California. He served in the U.S. Army before coming to Spain.

When the Spanish Civil War started, he decided to buy his way out of the Army. He bought out his army contract for $ 120 on July 3, 1937. Buying his contract, he was free of any commitment and he could go forward with his intention of going to Spain (supported by Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade).

He sailed from New York to France and then he crossed the Pyrenees and arrived in Spain on January 15, 1938. Initially he served to the German Dimitrov Battery. Then he was detached to the Special Defense against Aircraft, International Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He was part of the General Staff of the battalion in the communications section. During an air raid on Valencia, he was wounded. He was hospitalized until he returned to the US.

On February 4, 1939, aboard of the “President Harding”, two months before the Republican defeat and the end of the war, he returned to the United States. When America entered World War II, he was drafted, assigned to the 389th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion and again worked in communications, primarily as a switchboard operator.

Apart of being a member of Veteran Lincoln Brigade, he survived the Great Depression, served in a U.S. Army artillery unit in the 1930s, fought in World War II, worked as a farm laborer for more than 20 years, became active in the campaign for fair pay and working conditions in California’s fields and orchards, and was a member of the Communist Party. He was married three times and two sons.

Berg was supposed to be the last veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade alive until he died on February 28, 2016, in Columbia, California, at 100 years.
