History:

Joseph K. Hautaniemi was born on September 13, 1912.

He was one of the volunteers that fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. There is no much known about him, but we know that contacts in Boston helped arrange passages across the Atlantic for him and for a friend, Matti A. Mattson. Once in France, they made their way to Spain, where both became ambulance drivers.

Hautaniemi died on July 30, 1991, at 78 years old and was buried at Worcester County Memorial Park, in Worcester County, Massachusetts.
