History:

Spanish journalist, poet and narrator. He got married with María Francisca Bolibar Sequeiros and they had eleven children, among which the following are publicly relevant: the historian María Francisca, the biologist Santiago and the Spanish diplomat José María Castroviejo Bolibar.

Graduated in Law and Philosophy and Literature by the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he worked as a professor of Economy and Public Finance since 1935. Moreover, he was director of the newspaper El Pueblo Gallego.

Singular writer, always associated with Galicia and its traditions, he was friend and partner of Álvaro Cunqueiro, with whom he shared authorship in more than one work. He achieved the practical entirety of the journalist awards convened in Spain and the national one of literature. José María Castroviejo wrote theatre, papers, novel and poetry, although his most constant activity was press columnist.

Marta Lemos Jorge, biographer of Castroviejo, defines him as a “pioneer ecologist”. He is, therefore, a writer imbued by the fable, ethnographic gatherer of the Galician world. So much so, that his roots for his land made him passed on to posterity as the “Señor de Tirán” (Man of Tirán), where he lived most of his life as an eminent neighbor of this small waterfront town in Vigo.
