He was a Spanish physician who was exiled in Mexico after the Spanish Civil War. He is considered to be one of the most important scientists in history. He was the son of Blas Cabrera Topham and Antonia Felipe and his family moved to Tenerife.

In La Laguna, while his father was working as a notary, he attended high school and institute and he met María Sánchez Real who became his wife in 1906. They had three children: Blas (doctor), Luis (architect) and Nicolás (physician). He studied Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the Central University of Madrid and he earned a doctorate in Physical Sciences with the thesis titled "Sobre la variación diurna de la componente horizontal del viento". In 1905, he held the chair in Electricity and Magnetism at the Central University. In 1910, the "Junta para Ampliación de Estudios" (JAE) created the Laboratory of Physical Investigation (LIF) and Cabrera was decided to be the director. He received a scholarship from JAE and he went down to many European centers of investigations. Cabrera hosted Albert Einstein and Marie Curie when they visited Spain respectively in 1923 and 1931. In 1931, he was appointed as Rector of the Central University of Madrid. In 1933, he co-founded the "Universidad Internacional de Verano de Santander" currently known as "Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo", and he was appointed as Rector in 1934. Upon the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he passed the border and he reached Paris. For this reason, Enrique Moles, chemist and Blas collaborator, took over his place as the director of the LIF. Later, he was exiled in Mexico where he became professor of Atomic Physics and History of Physics, Department of Physical Sciences, UNAM. He died in Mexico in 1945.
