Person
Bretherton, Howard (1890-1969)
1890-02-13 - 1969-04-12
He was an American film director, film editor. Bretherton's artistic career as a film director began in the late 1920s when he started to work for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). He made his directorial debut in 1926 with his first film, While London Sleeps (1926), and thereafter spent more than three decades working mostly as a film director. Among the 100 pictures he directed, most of them were westerns but he also directed action and adventure films. Even though Bretherton was not known as a film director, his works, mostly westerns, were known among generations. He made films the way "B" picture producers wanted them made, which meant fast, with a minimum budget. The final film he directed was Night Raiders in 1952. Afterwards, he occasionally worked as a director in television but remained working in features until he finally retired in 1958.
