History:

Spanish doctor, exiled in Mexico. During the II Republic he was deputy for Unión Republicana (Republican Union), representing the province of Murcia. Juan Antonio Méndez was a son of José Méndez, merchant farmer, and Águeda Martínez, who frequented a confectionery in Lorca. The couple had 7 sons and Rafael Méndez Martínez was the youngest one.

He was prosecuted by the Tribunal especial para la Represión de la Masonería y el Comunismo (Special Court for the Repression of Freemasonry and Communism).

He was exiled to Mexico after the Spanish Civil War. There, he was Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of the Republican Union in exile, of which Diego Martínez Barrio was President.
