Manuel Murguía was a Spanish historian, writer, and archivist. He was son of the pharmacist Juan Martínez de Castro and Concepción Murguía and he married the writer Rosalía de Castro in 1858.
He obtained a Bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Philosophy from the Literary University of Santiago in 1851. He started his Pharmacy studies at the Central University of Madrid, as his father wished.
After the Revolution of 1868 he joined the Corps of Archivists, Librarians, and Antiquaries and was appointed Director of the Archive of Simancas. He held this position for two years and in 1870 he was appointed Director of the Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia. He was dismissed in 1875 and re-entered in 1892. After serving one year in the University Library of Santiago, he was assigned to the Provincial Treasury Archive of La Coruña. He retired in 1905. Moreover, he was a founding academician and the first President of the Galician Academy from 1905 until his death.
