Joaquín González y Fernández was a Spanish librarian and archivist. He worked in several ministries, such as Development or Finance, taking charge of the last one. He became a member of the Auxiliary Corps in 1893 by ministerial order. He went through different libraries and archives in the following years, including the Ministry of Development, the Archivo Histórico Nacional (AHN; National Historical Archive), the library of the Architecture College of Madrid, or the Archive of the Dirección General de Deuda Pública (General Directorate of Public Debt). As delegate, in 1908 he attended the General Congress of Publishers held in Madrid. During all those years he promoted over and over, as was usual among the members of the Corps who acceded by appointment and not by public examination. The promotion culminated with his appointment as AHN director in 1916, by proposal of the Board of Directors. His work at the head of the Archive was discreet, continuing the consolidation work initiated by Vignau. He left this position in 1930 as a result of the reform which was carried out the previous year, by which the Corps was simplified and those officials who acceded by public examination took precedence. From that moment until his retirement in 1931, he held positions of less responsibility in the Archive itself and in the Ministry of Public Instruction.
