Izquierdo Rojo, María (1946-)

Spanish philologist, professor, and politician. Degree in Philology and PhD in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Oviedo. She wrote her doctoral thesis on Juan Carlos Onetti. She worked first at the University College of Málaga, dependent on the University of Granada. In 1973 she moved to Granada in order to obtain a teaching position at her University. He joined the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE/Spanish Socialist Worker's Party) and the Federation of Teaching Workers of Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT/General Union of Workers). In the first democratic elections she was elected deputy for Granada by the Grupo Parlamentario Socialista (Socialist Parliamentary Group) during the Constituent Parliamentary term (1977‑1979). She was re‑elected in the First Parliamentary term (1979-1982) and in the Third Parliamentary term (1986-1989). In the Andalusian autonomy process she combined her parliamentary activity in the establishment of the pre‑autonomous structure of the Junta de Andalucía. On 27 May 1978 she was appointed as parliamentarian for Granada in the Pre‑autonomous Board of Andalusia, being a Councillor of the Board until its dissolution in 1979. She took part in the presentation of the draft Statute of Autonomy. She has also held the following positions: Secretary of State for the Autonomous Communities (1982-1987); Member of the European Parliament as a member of the Grupo Socialista (1989-2004); secretary of Regional Policy in the PSOE Federal Executive Committee (1979-1983) and, from the legalization of the party until 1990, she was also a member of the Socialist Federal Committee. When she finished her European parliamentary stage, she returned to the University to teach until her retirement.
