Spanish politician and lawyer. He was born on 12 December 1907 in Torreperogil (Gil). He was the son of Luis Fernández Redondo, shot on 20 December 1941, and father of the lawyer and writer Alfonso Fernández Malo. He was sentenced to one year in prison for actively participating in the 1934 Revolution. He was the UGT and PSOE provincial secretary in Jaén before the Spanish Civil War, as well as representative for the election of the President of the Second Spanish Republic. During the Spanish Civil War, he held various positions of responsibility as head of the Federación Provincial Socialista (Provincial Socialist Federation) and various public offices as president of the Provincial Council of Jaén. In March 1939 he represented the Federation of Jaen in the meeting of provincial socialist federations, which was held in Madrid after the coup d'etat of Colonel Casado to elect a new PSOE Executive Committee. This committee, opposed to Negrin, was transformed in order to replace the one led by Ramón Lamoneda, supporter of Negrín. After a few days he was arrested in the port of Alicante, from where he went to the Los Almendros concentration camp, and from there, to the prisons of Úbeda and Jaén. In this last gaol he was imprisoned two days before his father was shot, on 20 December 1941. Moreover, he was sentenced to death in court martial. The sentence was commuted to 30 years in prison, of which 7 were implemented. Upon being released in 1948, he was banned from practicing law and was forced into exile in Seville, where he worked as an administrative officer in a garage and where he continued his political and union activity clandestinely, creating and presiding over the Federación Socialista Andaluza (Andalusian Socialist Federation). Due to his clandestine work, he was arrested several times in 1950 and 1958. Through his son and Jaime Fernandez Gallardo, he contacted and sponsored the admission to the Juventudes Socialistas (Socialist Youth) of Felipe González, Alfonso Guerra, Antonio Prieto Durán, and Luis Yáñez, forming the nucleus for the reorganization of the PSOE. In the PSOE split during the Congress of Suresnes, he remained in the historical sector and was president of the national executive. In the subsequent congress of 1976 in Spain, he worried about the incorporation of a group from the historical sector to the renewed sector. He headed the PSOE list for Jaén in the 1977 General Elections of Spain, being elected deputy to Cortes. He remained in the key sector, defending the Party's republican and Marxist tradition. On 15 December 1978, a week after the approval of the Spanish Constitution, he died in the derailment suffered by the Talgo train at the Manzanares station, in which he was traveling from Madrid to Jaén.
