Gómez Franqueira, Eulogio (1917-1988)

Spanish teacher, businessman, and politician. He studied teaching and practiced as a teacher for almost twenty years, first in San Amaro and then in Castrelo de Miño. As a businessman he also started in Castrelo de Miño, where he set up a cooperative of product distribution. In 1961, Gómez Franqueira was appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture as manager of the Unión Territorial de Cooperativas Orensanas (UTECO/Territorial Union of Orensanas Cooperatives) and promoted the Cooperativas Orensanas (COREN).
In the democracy, he was Deputy for Orense of the Grupo Parlamentario de Unión de Centro Democrático (GUCD/Parliamentary Group of Union of Democratic Center) in the Constituent parliamentary terms, I and II. Manager.
Gómez Franqueira experienced a dramatic episode when, in 1980, a political‑military commando of the terrorist group ETA tried to kidnap him. The businessman himself thwarted the plan of the ETA members.
