At the beginning of the seventies he had his fisrt contacts with socialist organizations (PSOE and UGT), which he joined in Zamora in 1973.

He was secretary of the Provincial Organization of the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT/General Union of Workers) (1974‑1976) and first provincial secretary of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE/Spanish Socialist Worker's Party) (1974‑1978). Demetrio Madrid was the first president of the Council of Communities of Castilla y León (1983 and 1986), position of which he had to resign, harassed by socio‑labor problems which arised from his textile company 'Pekus'. In December 1985, a criminal complaint was filed against him at the Regional Appeal Court of Valladolid for the alleged irregularities in the sale of his textile company.
