Spanish lawyer, professor and socialist politician, one of the fathers of the 1979 Constitution. He was the son of the lawyer and socialist politician Gregorio Peces‑Barba del Brío (1912‑1997). Gregorio Peces‑Barca got a PhD in Law from the University of Madrid in 1971 and he also studied Comparative Law at the University of Strasbourg. From 1962 to 1977 he was a practicing lawyer, before the disappeared Tribunal de Orden Público (Court of Public Order) and in cases such as the Burgos Trial in 1970. He was also a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (1975). He belonged to the group Izquierda Democrática (Democratic Left) and in 1972 he joined the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE/Spanish Socialist Worker's Party), then in hiding. He was deputy for Valladolid in the Constituent Assembly, as well as a member of the talk which drafted the preliminary design of the 1978 Constitution. He was re‑elected in the I and II parliamentary terms and in 1982 he was named President of the Congress of Deputies. In 1986 he left his position in the Parliament and he rejoined the university life as Professor of Natural Law and of Philosophy of Law at the UCM. He served as Rector of the Carlos III University from its origins in 1989 until 2007.

In addition to his teaching job, Gregorio Peces‑Barba continued practicing as a lawyer. He was director of the International Institute of Human Rights of Strasbourg and parliamentarian of the Council of Europe. In 1963 he founded the magazine Cuadernos para el diálogo together with Pedro Altares and Javier Rupérez, among others. In 1987 he was decorated with the French Legion of Honor and in 2006 with the great Cross of the Order of Carlos III. He died in Oviedo on 24 July 2012.
