During the Spanish Civil War, Vidal was the secretary of organization of militias in the Local Committee of Anti-fascists Militias until late 1936, when he joined the 29th Division as a sergeant. Vidal went into exile to the French concentration camp Saint Cyprien, and when he came back to Catalonia, he was arrested and sent to the concentration camp of San Marcos (León). Then, he carried out forced works to build the Valle de los Caídos and was sent to a disciplinary battalion in Africa.
When Vidal returned home, he continued with his clandestine stance against Franco, taking part in the creation of Democratic Alliance and joining the Catalonian Socialist Movement (MSC).
Vidal was one of the speakers of the "Miting de la Libertad" (June 1976), a driving-force of the Partit Socialista de Catalunya-Congrés and co-founder of Unió de Pagesos.
