The son of a captain of a mail boat, appointed as captain of the same ship in 1735, he stand out early as soldier and sailor. Appointed honorary second lieutenant (1738), honorary lieutenant (1748) and honorary captain (1753) of the Navy by war merits in the supply of Majorca and the struggle against the Berberia pirates. The Spanish government gave him a letter of marque as privateer, a job in which he proved to have outstanding conditions. His success beared him the official rank of captain of the Spanish Navy. He cleaned the Spanish Mediterranean of Berberian pirates seizing great number of vessels, cargo and pirate crews.Retired in 1774, he was enroled back into the service as the first brigadier of the Spanish Navy, commanding several attacks to the Morrocan coast and convoying the Spanish ships to America in the Mediterranean.Appointed Chief of Squadron (1779) and commander of the fleet for the siege of Gibraltar, he designed and ordered the firsts armoured gunboats of History, that served succesfully due to its little draft and high mobility.Retired again in Mallorca with the rank of lieutenant-general, he was openly snubbed by the Navy officers by his humble origins and lack of formal career.
