Spanish actress exiled in France.
She was a French theatre and cinema star. Daughter of the Spanish politician Santiago Casares Quiroga and Gloria Pérez Corrales. Once the Spanish Civil War broke in November of 1936, she went into exile to France with her mother. There she studied performing arts in the Lycée Victor Duruy in Paris and she became a famous artist interpreting papers such as Lady Macbeth, Fedra, Medea or Mother Courage. She was also an outstanding actress in cinema, winning a César in 1988 for films such as "Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne" by Bresson, "La Chartreuse de Parme" by Christian-Jacque and "Orphée" by Cocteau. After Franco's death, she returned to Spain in 1976 in order to star in Rafael Alberti's play "El adefesio". However, she soon returned to France disappointed by the instrumentalization of her name. On her return from her trip to Spain she wrote her memoirs, "Residente privilegiada" (Privileged Resident). She received the National Theater Prize from the French government and in Spain the Medal of Merit for Fine Arts. She died in Alloue at the age of 74.
