History:

He was a military, representative, senator and XII Count of Puñonrostro and X Marquis of Maenza. He was the son of Manuel Mateo Arias Dávila y Matheu and Josefa Herrera Berio. He received a strict education in the militia. He embarked towards the Iberian Peninsula in 1805 with the purpose of taking care of his Spanish possessions, a trip in which he was accompanied by Mexía Lequerica. In 1809 he was elected Government Representative of Quito before the Board, although he did not take office. A year later he was elected Alternate Representative of the Kingdom of New Granada in the Cortes of Cádiz and in subsequent years he maintained an active representation. The reason behind his election was more his noble title than his capacity of oratory, virtue which Mexía Lequerica had. However, like him, he was a defender of a better representativeness of the American provinces, demanding that the way to elect the American representatives should be equal to his peninsular colleagues. At the same time, he participated militarily in the armed conflict against the government of Joseph Bonaparte.

With the restoration of King Ferdinand VII in 1814 he began to support the Monarchy and although he was close to the Court, he did not accept the numerous positions offered to him. He had an important role as advisor during the regency of Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies and was a strong advocate of the Elizabethan monarchy which he and his children defended. He became Senator of Orense and then senator for life in 1845, the finishing touch to his career was his appointment as field marshal in 1847 and second general commander of the Royal Corps of Halberdiers. In 1810 he married Felipa Carondelet Castaños, daughter of Baron de Carondelet, Héctor de Carondelet, and they gave birth to Javier Arias-Dávila Matheu y Carondelet, XIII Count of Puñonrostro.
