He was a lawyer and a government representative. He was the son of Salvador de Esponda, who was born in Vera de Bidasoa, and María Gertrudis de Olaechea. He had three brothers: Manuel, a militia captain; María Brígida, and Salvador José.

He began his academic education in his hometown and in 1786 he entered the Real Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico. He then enrolled at the Real y Pontificia Universidad de México where he obtained a degree in Philosophy in 1789 and a degree in Canon Law in 1792. In 1795 he worked as a lawyer in the Royal Court of Mexico but, due to family-related reasons, he had to move again to Guatemala where he joined the Royal Court of Guatemala. Throughout the following years he became an interim advisor to Mayor Agustín de las Cuentas Zayas, mayor of Ciudad Real, as well as a fiscal promoter and Indian defender. In addition, he also became a lieutenant governor, the sub-delegate of the party of Tuxtla and the Mayor of the province. In 1807 he presented his candidacy to occupy the post of mayor of Honduras. In addition to his more political facet, Sebastian Esponda was an important landowner: he had part of his land dedicated to cocoa cultivation, so he created a trading company dedicated to this product. He also engaged in livestock which allowed him to monopolize the supply of meat in Tuxtla.

He was elected Government Representative of the province of Chiapas in 1810; he did not join Cortes (parliament) since he died during the trip. He was married to Clara Antonia Rosalía with whom he had seven children: Ana Francisca (1799), Joaquín Ramón (1802), Francisco Narciso (1803), María de la Concepción (1805), Manuel José (1807), Josefa Rosenda (1808) and Mariano Sebastián (1811).
