Son of Jerónimo Girón de Montezuma, Marquis of Amarillas and Viceroy of Navarra, and Isabel las Casas Aragorri. He also was Castaños' nephew, and Field Marshals José Ezpeleta and Pascual Enrile's brother-in-law. In 1822 he was persecuted by Constitutionalists and discharged from the army, having to flee to Gibraltar, from where, at the end of the Trienio Liberal (Liberal Triennium), he was sent to Seville as a barracks officer. In 1832 he was appointed Captain General of Granada and later on of Andalucía, becoming a member of the State's Councillor after Ferdinand's VII death and during Isabella's II minory. On 26 June 1835 he was given the title of Duke of Ahumada with Grandeeship of Spain.
