Giménez Soler, Andrés (1869-1938)
Zaragoza (España) 1869-11-10 - Zaragoza (España) 1938-09-29
Archivist and historian. After completing the first formative stages in his hometown, he enrolled at the Universidad de Zaragoza where he graduated in Philosophy and Letters; he obtained his Ph.D. from the Universidad Central de Madrid and entered through public examination in the Cuerpo Facultativo de Archiveros, Bibliotecarios y Anticuarios. Assigned to the Archive of the Crown of Aragon, he soon requested leave of absence from the corps when he obtained the professorship of Ancient and Medieval History of Spain at the Universidad de Sevilla. A few years later he obtained the same professorship at the Universidad de Zaragoza, of which he became rector. Although he was granted a scholarship by the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios on several occasions, he never enjoyed the aid.
He was a disciple of Julián Ribera, who got him interested in Arabism, and a great connoisseur of Aragonese medieval history and its sources. A firm defender of Aragonese regionalism, he was president of the History section of the Unión Aragonesa, member of the Board of Directors of the Amigos de Aragón and militant of the Unión Regionalista Aragonesa. Member of the Real Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona, of the Real Academia de la Historia and of the Real Academia de Ciencias y Bellas Artes de San Luis de Zaragoza.
