Soldier and spanish deputy. His family was noble, and he was a descendant of the doctor Francisco de Zayas.
He was sent to Spain in 1789, where he began his military career as a cadet. He participated in the War against the French Republic (1793), with the position of Lieutenant, and later, he was deployed in Veracruz to bring goods from Veracruz to Cadiz. Furthermore, he fought against the English at the Battle of Coruña, after which he was promoted to Captain. He was designated as an assistant to Gonzalo O' Farrill, who he accompanied him to Tuscany, and then to Florence. In 1807, he returned to Spain and was promoted to Commander in the Princess's regiment.
In 1808, he was commissioned to go to Bayonne to inform the king about the reality of what was happening. He was deployed in Valladolid, and promoted to Infantry Colonel. He fought in Extremadura, which caused him to be named brigadier by the Central Junta, and was at the Battle of Ocaña, for which he was criticized.
In 1810, he was Field Marshal. He was in charge of the troops and he fought in different places during the Peninsular War at the Battle of La Albuera, in Cadiz, Ronda, Murcia and Valencia. He conquered Cuenca, but in Valencia, he was cornered by the French. Finally, he had to surrender, and he was taken to the castle of Vincennes. It is thought that he joined Freemasonry in the lodge of Montpellier or Marsella. He was released by Napoleon, who believed he could use him to for diplomatic affaires. He had to go was allocated to deployed in Valensay and accompanied Ferdinand VII in his return.
He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1814, and he was decorated with the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand When the Constitution was proclaimed in 1820, he was the first general the king named as his assistant. He was deputy to Cortes for Havana, member of the Diputación Permanente de las Cortes and Captain General of Madrid.
When absolutism was reinstated in Spain, his job, salary and decorations were taken away. Days before he died in 1840, his jobs and honors were restored.
