History:

Spanish painter.

Born on 20 May 1904 in Paris (France). Son of José Viñes Roda, engineer, and of María Soto Mijango. Nephew of Ricardo Viñes, piano concert artist, and of Eugenio Viñes, trader. His sister Elvira Viñes was a dancer and Spanish dance teacher.

He married Lucia Jourdain, painter, and they had a daughter, Nina, musicologist. The composer Erik Satie, friend of his uncle Ricardo, dedicated him the piano piece "Danse maigre" in 1913. During the First World War, he moved to Madrid with his family. There he studied in the Liceo Francés, and frequented the Prado Museum and the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He returned to Paris in 1919, where his uncle Ricardo introduced him in the Parisian artistic circles of the 20s. He followed Pablo Picasso's advice and he devoted himself to painting. He entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and took part in the art workshops of sacred art of Maurice Denis and George Desvalières. There he met who would be his wife, the painter known as Lulu Jourdain. Finished his studies, he expanded his formation with André Lhote and Gino Sévérini. In 1923, in collaboration with his father, and together with the painters Manuel Ángeles Ortiz and Hermenegildo Lanz, he took part in the decoration of "El retablo de maese Pedro" (1919-1923) by Manuel de Falla; the premiere took place in the Polignac princess palace, in Paris, on 25 June of that same year. These collaborations impulsed his professional career, and allowed him to meet figures like Luis Buñel or Christian Zervos. In 1927, he joined the artists group of the Galerie Percir of Paris, and a year later, he took part in the Salon del Surindépendants and in the Salon del Vrais Indépendants. He also exposed, together with other Spanish painters, in the Galerie Zack of Paris, Jardín Botánico of Madrid, Thannhauser Galleries of Munich, and in the Palace of Fine Arts of Brussels. In May 1936, he received, together with his wife, a tribute in Madrid organised by the Buñel brothers, Federico Garcia Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Mª Teresa León, Alberto Sánchez and Juan Vicéns, among others; to the act assissted people from the music world like Adolfo Salazar, Pilar Bayona and Gustavo Durán, and of the letters like Miguel Hernández and Pablo Neruda.

During the Spanish Civil War, the republican Government named him general secretary of the Exposición Internacional of Paris in 1937; with the start of the Second World War, he moved to the french Basque Country. He returned to Paris in 1940, and taught Spanish guitar lessons to subsist. He travelled to Madrid in 1965, and the Dirección General de Bellas Artes dedicated him an exposition in the Museo de Arte Moderno of Madrid, event that allowed him to sign a contract with the Galería Theo to expose yearly in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. During the 80s, the Casa de España in Paris, the Museo de Bellas Artes of Santander, or the Musée Bonnat of Bayona, organised expositions of his works. He passed away on 24 February 1993 in Paris (France).
