History:

English conductor and pianist. Clarence Raybould was born on June 28, 1886 in Birmingham (England).

He attended the University of Birmingham, graduating in 1912, and was hired by the Midland Institute of Music. His opera "The Sumida River" was premiered in Birmingham in 1916, and he conducted the first British performances of Paul Hindemith's operas "Cardillac" in 1936 and "Mathis der Maler" in 1939. In Spain, he visited Granada in October 1929 and wrote to Manuel de Falla, presenting himself as a friend of Segismundo Romero, requesting an appointment and expressing his interest in the Orquesta Bética de Cámara. Years later, in 1930, he conducted the Columbia Concert Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's "Egmont" in Donostia-San Sebastián that was recorded by the Columbia Graphophone Company. He was involved in the organisation of the Glastonbury Festivals, alongside Rutland Boughton, where he also appeared as a pianist and conductor. After the end of World War I, he worked with the Beecham Opera Company and the British National Opera Company. Alun Hoddinott dedicated the "Variations for Orchestra" (1963) that he wrote for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales to Raybould. He passed away on March 27, 1972 in Bideford (England).
