Spanish cellist and teacher.
Segismundo Romero was born in Granada in 1886. He married Camelia Venegas Velasco and had one son, Carlos Romero Guijo.
Romero was a full professor at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Sevilla and member of the orchestra of Seville's Teatro San Fernando. In 1924 he founded the Orquesta Bética de Cámara, together with Eduardo Torres Pérez and Manuel de Falla. This chamber orchestra was formed after the Seville premiere of the concert version of "El retablo de maese Pedro" (1919-1923) at the Teatro San Fernando on March 23, 1923.
In the 1920s, he played with the Radio Sevilla sextet, which also included Joaquín Fons, Fernando Oliveras, Luis Rivas, Pedro Zúñiga and Manuel Navarro.
In January 1939, Romero became president of the Orquesta Bética after Luis Lerate Santaella resigned. During his presidency, the board consisted of Pedro Zúñiga Vaca (vice-president), Felipe Rodríguez Salú (secretary), Diego Pantión Pérez (accountant), Manuel Navarro Lozano (treasurer), Luis Díaz García (first board member) and Enrique García Silva (second board member).
His correspondence with Falla was published as "Cartas a Segismundo Romero" (1976), edited by Rafael Pascual Recuero. He retired on December 30, 1959 and passed away on April 22, 1974 in Castilleja de la Cuesta (Seville).
