History:

Poet, essayist, literary critic, and teacher of Spanish language and literature.

She was born in Seville in 1925. She graduated in Philosophy and Letters from the Universidad de Sevilla (1960) and obtained her Ph.D. in 1963 with the thesis La vida y la obra de José Luis Hidalgo. During the preparation of her doctoral thesis, she worked as a teaching assistant and later as an interim adjunct professor at the same university (1964). A member of the Cuerpo Auxiliar de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos since 1957, she was assigned to the Biblioteca de la Universidad de Sevilla and the Servicio de Archivos in Cádiz.

In February 1966, she passed the entrance examination for the professorship of Spanish language and literature, and was assigned to the Instituto de Enseñanza Media 'Columela' in Cádiz. After the school year ended, she was invited by Michigan State University in East Lansing (Michigan, USA) as a Distinguished Visiting Professor and a few months later as a Full Professor. In 1970, she returned to Spain and resumed her teaching position at the Instituto de Oviedo and later at the Instituto de Albacete. Between 1974 and 1976, she taught at University College Dublin (Ireland), and upon returning, she took up her teaching position at the Instituto de Viveiro (Lugo) and later at various schools in Ferrol (A Coruña).

As a poet, she is part of the so-called 'Generation of the 50s' and belonged to the Club de la Rábida of the Seville-based Escuela de Estudios Hispanoamericanos. She was co-director of the miscellany poetry series La Barca de Loto and founder of the Premio de poesía Esquío, organized by the Sociedad Cultural Valle Inclán in Ferrol. Throughout her literary career, she received various awards. In 1961, she won a secondary award at the Premio Adonais de Poesía. In 2002, she gathered her seven books into one volume titled En el viento, hacia el mar, for which she received the Premio Nacional de Poesía the following year. In 2006, she was awarded the Premio de la Crítica and the Premio Andalucía de las Letras 'Luis de Góngora y Argote'. In 2016, she received the Gold Medals of Merit in Fine Arts; the following year, the Centro Andaluz de las Letras named her 'Author of the Year'; and in 2019, she was awarded the "Federico García Lorca" City of Granada International Poetry Prize.

An honorary member of the Real Academia Sevillana de Buenas Letras and the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas, she was awarded the title of Hija Predilecta de Andalucía in 2005 and adoptive daughter of Ferrol in 2008.

She passed away on July 21, 2024, in San Salvador de Serantes (Ferrol, A Coruña).
