Archivist, teacher, and medieval historian.
Son of José Udina and Josefa Martorell. He graduated in Philosophy and Letters from the Universidad de Barcelona and obtained his Ph.D. from the Universidad Central de Madrid with a thesis on "El condado de Barcelona en el siglo X". He was a disciple of Antonio de la Torre.
In 1941, he joined the Corps of Specialist Archivists, Librarians and Archaeologists, being assigned to the Archive of the Crown of Aragon. He was a teacher at the Escuela de Bibliotecarias in Barcelona and at the Universidad de Barcelona. He obtained a position as an adjunct professor through public examination in 1947 and became a professor of History at the Universidad de Valladolid in 1960, though he requested a leave of absence. He was the director of the Museo de Historia de la Ciudad de Barcelona (1959-1976), municipal delegate of Culture for the Barcelona City Council (1975-1976), director of the Archive of the Crown of Aragon (1961-1982), and general deputy director of Archives at the Spanish Ministry of Culture. He also served as dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, where he was a professor of Medieval Spanish History.
He collaborated actively with the Instituto Jerónimo Zurita, was a full academic of the Real Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona, and a corresponding academic of the Real Academia de Historia.
In 1944, he married María Antonia Abelló.
