History:
Spanish historian and professor.
She was born in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife) on 19th July 1902, where she studied elementary school and baccalaureate and graduated in 1921. After her family moved to Valencia, she began her Philosophy and Arts degree, specialising in History, at the University of the aforementioned city. She finished her degree in 1928 with an Extraordinary Degree Award. The following year she joined the teaching staff of the University of Valencia as an assistant of the chair of Archaeology, Numismatics, and Epigraphy held by the professor Luis Gonzalvo París. Thus, she was the first woman in becoming a professor at the University.
During his first teaching years, she played an important role in the university archaeology lab, created in 1921, cataloguing archaeological material.
During the Spanish Civil War, she was temporarily dismissed and, due to the post-war purges she had to leave her teaching job and opened a Latin academy in her home while she was preparing her doctorate. In 1947 she returned to the University as associate professor of History of Modern and Contemporary Art and, in 1949, she defended her thesis entitled "Nuevas aportaciones a la historia de Valencia: notas para el estudio de la vida y la obra de los Macip". In 1950 she obtained a position in a high school of Castellón de la Plana. In addition, she gave lessons in the Women Delegated Section of the Valencia High School "Juan de Garay". She retired in 1966 and died in 1971 in Valencia. In 2011, the award "Premio Género y Docencia en la Educación Superior Olimpia Arozena Torres" was created to recognise her academic and teaching work and for being the first woman in becoming a professor at the University of Valencia.
