History:

The first Jesuits in Barcelona arrived in 1545. They were only two men, Father Araoz and Father Fabro, who did not have any fixed place to establish. When Francisco de Borja and his family knew about their work in several establishments of the city, both fathers started counting on their support to purchase some houses, with their farmyards and orchards, that was placed in front of the second wall of the city, in the other side of La Rambla. According to some studies, they considered necessary the construction of their own church to carry out their missionary work so it was in these buildings where they established the first temple. They were located near the University and they expanded their location until they joined the school dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem. The first priests worked on the sacraments of confession and communion as well as the attention to orphan girls. So they created an orphanage. The first church in Bethlehem (Barcelona) was opened in 1555. The current one dates back to the 17th century and underlay for the realization of the usual ministries, as it happened in other places. The house was a school, as every home belonging to the Society, but lessons did not start until 1566. They had to wait for 3 years to have their own ones in Theology. However, the contact and assistance of the theology students of the "Estudio General" (General study) started very soon. The school of Bethlehem counted on a special mission: to serve as a home for the guests of the Jesuits that travelled from and to Italy and Europe, going through this international port in Barcelona. The "Pía de la Orden" was organized several years later around the church and the School of Bethlehem. The same happened with its Marian devotion through the "Congregación de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora", which was a congregation founded in one of their chapels. This congregation was supported by the donations of artisans, merchants and rich people from the city, who paid for the creation of hospitals and the care and visits of the prisoners that came from Barcelona's prisons, among other activities. In 1896, this congregation became a religious one, joining the Franciscan Order.
