History:

The Marquis of Almazán was the instigator of the first Jesuit school's founding in Tudela, Navarra. He carried out the first paperwork and made this religious Order known among Tuleda's population. The Jesuit's presence in the city is stated to begin in 1578 even though they were not many of them. Gaspar Pérez, together with other religious people, accomplished mission works among the population despite lacking a stable lodging. Since then, the population started to resort to the Order each year for it to participate in the Lenten sermons. A close relationship among them favoured the canonry's request and acceptance of a college-residence of the Society in the city. As it happened in other towns, other Orders already established in Tudela and some important figures were against the Jesuits because they did not consider viable the maintenance of another religious institution in the city. Since the end of the 16th century, the school's project received donatives and private inheritances for its achievement. However, its founding did not take place until 1600. It was carried out thanks to the inheritance given by Inés de Lasarte y Veraiz. In 1614-1613, according to some sources, the local government transferred the "Escuela de latinidad" (Latin School) or "Estudios Viejos" to the Jesuit school and it became responsible of the formation of Tuleda's youth. What happened next with this institution's development is still unknown. It counted on an attached church dedicated to Saint George. In 1698, it began its construction. When the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, it became a municipal property as the "Escuela de Primeras Letras" (School of basic education), and shared the building with the "Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País" (Economic Society of Friends of the Country). Later, it accepted the first "Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria" (Comprehensive School) that was introduced in Navarra in 1839 and the "Escuela Especial de Agricultura" (Special School of Agriculture) in 1851. The new school of Jesuits, the one of San Francisco Javier, appeared in the same period. It was attached to the temple and started to be built in 1887. The project was finished in 1891. It is currently a secondary school.

Context:
