He was a naturalist and entomologist as well as a great promoter of Spanish biology. He went into exile in Mexico after the Spanish Civil War. He graduated in Law and holds a PhD in Natural Sciences. He obtained the professorship at the Central University of Madrid, where he was named professor of Entomology in 1877. As a follower of Krausism, he presided over the Committee for Extension of Studies and Scientific Research (JAE) between 1934 and 1939, coming after Santiago Ramón y Cajal, and the Spanish Society of Natural History. He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (1930) and the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (1944) as well as other scientific societies of Europe and America. He also was the director of the Natural Sciences Museum (1901-1934) and the Royal Botanical Gardens of Madrid (1921-1930). He was given an honorary doctorate from the Autonomous National University of Mexico for his remarkable academic work from his arrival in the country until his death at the age of 94.
