History:

Old Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See. The episcopal see was restored in 1102 by concession to the bishop Jeronimus (Jerónimo de Perigueux), who died around 1120. It became suffragan of Santiago de Compostela in 1124. The first cathedral canonry is stated to appear in 1133.The first Compostelan council was celebrated in Salamanca in 1164. Four years later, the dioceses of Salamanca and Ciudad Rodrigo got separated. The documentation on Pedro, the first "maestrescuela"* of the Cathedral, dates back to 1174 and the University of Salamanca, that has its origins in the mentioned Cathedral School, was founded in 1218.

*High office in some cathedral churches in charge of teaching ecclesiastic sciences.
