from 1936 to 1939
Initiated in April 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, this feminist organization sided with the Spanish anarchosyndicalism. Alongside the National Confederation of Labour, the Iberian Federation of Libertarian Youth and the Iberian Anarchist Federation, it constituted one of the organizations that took part in the Spanish freedom movement. They defended women's emancipation, regarded as an essential pre-requisite for the Social Revolution. Among its founders were the writer Lucía Sánchez Saornil, the journalist Mercedes Comaposada and the doctor Amparo Poch Gascón. The Cultural Women's Organization was initiated in Barcelona in 1934 and, jointly with the magazine "Free Women from Madrid", it would give rise to the future organization.
